Home / ConservAction: Tales from the Americas—Protecting Yellow-Tailed Woolly Monkeys in Peru

Continuing on the theme of Tales From The Americas, the Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) is excited to present Dr. Sam Shanee as the speaker of our next ConservAction Lecture about the critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey in Peru and how communities come together to conserve it.

Featured repeatedly on the list of the world’s top 25 most endangered primates, the yellow-tailed woolly monkey is endemic to a small area of cloud forest in the tropical Andes region of Peru. The area faces immense pressures from mining concessions, commercial logging, and land clearance for cattle ranching and coffee cultivation, and its forests are disappearing rapidly. Since 2007, Neotropical Primate Conservation (NPC), the organization founded by Dr. Shanee, has been using the yellow-tailed woolly monkey as a conservation “flagship species”. The Yellow-Tailed Woolly Monkey Conservation Project has several focus areas, with the ultimate aim of creating community-run reserves to ensure long-term habitat protection for the woolly monkey and other species.

Prior to establishing NPC, Dr. Shanee worked on various wildlife rescue and reintroduction projects in South America, Asia, and the Middle East. Dr. Shanee holds a master’s degree in primate conservation and a doctorate in the conservation and ecology of Andean primates in Peru, both from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. Since 2007, he has been in South America carrying out conservation and research in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. He tries to bridge the gap between academia and activism, promoting the conservation of primates and habitat, primarily through community involvement in protected area management and anti-wildlife-trafficking campaigns.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the yellow-tailed woolly monkey and what communities in Peru are doing to save them. Sign up today!
